How I Make Consistent Monthly Revenue Through Teaching Art

In early 2020 I spontaneously created what turned out to be one of the best (and most consistent) sources of income for my art business.

I launched my monthly painting membership somewhat on a whim, and since it has been born hundreds of artists have gone through its doors.

What did this mean for my art business? It translated to a new beautiful rock-solid income stream that brings in consistent money each and every month.

Teaching doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but like all skills it is definitely one that you can learn if you dream of implementing a teaching practice into your art business.

Let’s take a dive into the world of teaching artwork for profit and impact!

Are You Ready To Start Teaching Art?

Not everyone is ready to implement a teaching practice into their art business – so let’s cover a few things that are important to consider first.

Do You Know How You Will Direct Traffic to Your Offer?

It’s hard to sell art lessons if no one knows that they exist!

Consider how you will be bringing traffic to your teaching offer.

YouTube

This is my favorite way to drive traffic to my own painting membership. It’s totally free to start a YouTube channel, plus there are a bunch of other reasons why YouTube is the bomb.

Why YouTube Is Great:

  • It’s a unique platform that puts an emphasis on creating evergreen content (YouTube content, unlike social media, actually gets more traction with time)
  • Because it is technically a search engine it has robust systems that actually drive traffic FOR you (like their Recommended Feed)
  • Creating video content does wonders to paint you as the expert (pun intended)
  • The YouTube algorithm helps to attract the right kind of people that will be primed for your paid art lessons
  • YouTube is a go-to place where people want to learn, whereas social media is largely for entertainment
  • Their Ad Revenue program allows you to turn views into cash

Social Media

Growing a social media following is a focus for most artists these days, and it can be hugely  helpful for getting more eyes on your teaching offers.

In Person

Dream of hosting in-person events where you not only teach valuable art skills but also offer an incredible experience for your students? Taking advantage of local advertising will be a powerful tool here.

You Have A Strong Idea for What Your Teaching Offer Will Be

The more dialed-in and concrete your teaching offer is, the more powerful it will be. People like to confidently know what they are investing in before they take the leap, so getting the details in order will increase your sales in a huge way.

Are you teaching a foundational program for how to start painting with watercolors? Or are you specifically teaching a workshop on how to paint a realistic portrait of your dog?

Clarity is key here. And it goes both ways too.

If people are confident that they know what they will get, they’ll be that much more likely to jump in with a huge “yes!”.

It also takes the stress off your back – if you are crystal clear in what you are offering, you won’t have to worry about people jumping in and thinking that your lessons are something they’re not.

(For the most part anyway! In my membership I teach how to paint realistic animals with oil paint. I once had someone sign up only to tell me that they “don’t paint wildlife” – even though the word wildlife is right in the name of the membership! I still chuckle when I think about that one).

Here are a few questions that can help you get clear on this.

What are people already asking you about?

What do you feel the most comfortable doing?

What makes you the most happy to create?

You Know Who You Want to Teach

Do you want to offer classes to people who want to unwind and have fun while creating something they can hang on their wall?

Or do you want to teach someone who is looking to boost their skill level so they too can grow as an artist?

Other demographics such as age, gender, life stage, geographic location and even interests can come in to play here as well.

Teaching artwork, especially online, can be such a powerful way to not only impact others in a beautiful way, but to bring in a new revenue stream for your art business.

Starting your teaching practice for the first time can be daunting! So stay tuned, a blog post with a breakdown of how you can start teaching art is coming soon.
